The Hayek Institute condemns bureaucracy
Peter Kopa, Prague, February 16, 2026
Introduction
Excessive state bureaucracy generates a series of socio-political ills: it erodes trust in institutions, exacerbates inequality, weakens democratic participation, and makes the state itself slow, opaque, and self-referential.
The origin and purpose of bureaucracy was to rationalize and make state action predictable (clear rules, division of functions, hierarchy, professionalization). However, it tends to grow systemically and become an end in itself. Classical criticism warns that, beyond a certain point, the pursuit of order and control locks individuals and organizations into an “iron cage” of rules, forms, and procedures that no longer serve the citizen, but rather the maintenance of the apparatus. This favors the monopoly of information, corruption, and opacity, which hinders democratic control over those who administer the state.
This means that the “bureaucratic monster” denigrates man, impeding his freedom of initiative in all areas. It thus opposes the Judeo-Christian vision of freedom in politics and economics: https://thinktanklatam.org/why-does-the-left-have-seven-lives/
We quote some statements from the Hayek Institute
The Friedrich A. v. Hayek Institute is a Vienna-based research center dedicated to Hayek’s work and the theories of the “Austrian School of Economics.” The aim of its activity is to spread knowledge about this school of thought among the public, to respond to current issues based on its teachings, and to promote liberal thought and action.
Dear Sirs and Madams, dear friends of the Hayek Institute:
In view of the serious economic crisis and persistent stagflation in Austria, it is more urgent than ever to return to the principles of the market economy. While the government, with its current “package of measures to reduce bureaucracy,” is only attempting to technocratically optimize the constraints of the state, we at the Hayek Institute advocate genuine liberating measures.
In this newsletter, we not only analyze the worthlessness of national politics, but also present, with the “Manifesto 4liberty.eu,” a Europe-wide roadmap for genuine deregulation instead of mere simplification. But we also look to the future with optimism: take advantage of our book promotion to prepare yourself intellectually, enjoy the first insights from the Free Market Road Show 2026, and let’s end the year together with confidence.
Package of measures to reduce bureaucracy
The “debureaucratization package” presented by the Austrian government recognizes the enormous burden that bureaucratic costs, amounting to €15 billion, place on the economy, but it does not provide an in-depth analysis of their causes. Instead of fundamentally questioning state interventionism, the measures only aim at technocratic optimization and digitization, which, in case of doubt, even perfects state control.
Essential structural reforms, such as labor market flexibility or the elimination of market-distorting subsidies, are neglected in favor of cosmetic adjustments. Our brief analysis makes it clear that we do not need more efficient management of decline, but the courage to achieve true freedom and deregulation.
Deregulation instead of simplification: a manifesto for Europe
Europe risks falling behind globally due to a tangle of outdated and excessive regulations; mere “simplification” is no longer enough. Together with the network https://4liberty.eu/, in our new manifesto we call for a radical shift toward measurable deregulation to save Europe’s competitiveness.
Key demands include a net reduction in legal acts of 1% per year and the introduction of automatic “sunset clauses,” so that laws expire after five years if their usefulness is not proven. It is time for the EU to end the experiment of the controlling state and “world champion of regulation” and make room for entrepreneurial freedom again.
Outlook: Free Market Road Show 2026
As we close out the year, preparations are already underway for the world’s largest network of libertarian events. The Free Market Road Show (FMRS) will once again tour Europe and the United States in 2026, bringing together leading economists, policymakers, and libertarian thinkers. Enjoy high-level discussions on geopolitical challenges and the renaissance of the Austrian School of Economics. Visit freemarket-rs.com to stay up to date.
