A Bit of History

In our Internet age, a simple search is all it takes to get answers to almost any question in a matter of seconds. Very often, that search leads to one website: Wikipedia.
What began as a digital encyclopedia is now much more than that: it is the most widely used source on the Internet and is therefore considered the world’s largest online encyclopedia.

In March 2000, Internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, who holds a Ph.D., launched a joint project. Through the company Bomis, they founded the English-language online encyclopedia under the name Nupedia. Then, in 2001, Jimmy Wales launched the Wikipedia project.

Initially, Wikipedia was conceived solely as a preliminary stage for articles on Nupedia, but it unexpectedly attracted many readers and developed a strong momentum of its own. On January 15, 2001, the project finally went live at its own domain: wikipedia.com.

By 2025, Wikipedia recorded a 50% increase in visitors, due to its growing use by AI. Thus, Wikipedia ceases to be merely an encyclopedia read by people and gradually becomes a digital knowledge infrastructure with significant global influence. Knowledge is power!

Is Wikipedia free?

Wikipedia calls itself a “free encyclopedia.” But to what extent is this power of knowledge truly free? In 2025, the online encyclopedia contained more than 66 million encyclopedia articles in over 350 languages. It is the largest online encyclopedia and the world’s largest collection of knowledge.
The so-called “wiki system” is highlighted time and again; thanks to it, users can not only read Wikipedia pages but also edit them themselves.

The page’s design is simple and does not give the impression that highly paid web designers worked on it. This image of austerity is reinforced by the request for donations, as if the administrators depended on such support, as if it were a nonprofit project carried out by selfless volunteers. Soros and the Rockefeller Foundation are on the list of patrons.

Not a word is mentioned about the revenue—which amounts to many millions—nor about the interests of the main funders, nor about the intelligence agencies, which we will discuss below.

Manipulations

In 2015, German filmmakers and authors Markus Fiedler and Frank-Michael Speer released the documentary “The Dark Side of Wikipedia,” which is a detailed analysis of Wikipedia’s objectivity.

This documentary clearly shows—using the specific case of Swiss historian Dr. Daniele Ganser and his lectures on the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001—that Wikipedia entries on certain individuals and geopolitical topics are treated selectively.

Furthermore, during his research, Markus Fiedler discovered that there is an inner circle among Wikipedia editors with a clear hierarchy. Attempts to correct these articles are labeled “vandalism” or blocked through technical restrictions. In this way, objective and neutral contributions from people outside the inner circle are prevented, and politically incorrect descriptions of events, people, or contexts are censored.

Another striking aspect of Wikipedia is that nearly all free and independent media outlets—as well as independent journalists—and the results of their investigative reporting are defamed through the selective use of controversial terms such as “conspiracy theory” or “conspiracy theorist.” And this, despite the fact that Wikipedia presents itself to the outside world as “the free encyclopedia.” Markus Fiedler concludes that Wikipedia is being used to carry out a smear campaign in a completely selective manner.

Influence of Intelligence Agencies

Larry Sanger, one of Wikipedia’s two founders, who served as its “chief organizer” until 2002 before leaving the project, accused Wikipedia of being an instrument of control for the U.S. establishment, which includes the CIA, the FBI, and other U.S. intelligence agencies.
According to Sanger, intelligence agencies exert significant influence over Wikipedia. In his view, they deliberately use the online encyclopedia as a tool in the so-called “information war.” “We have evidence that as early as 2008, CIA and FBI computers were used to edit Wikipedia articles,” stated Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia.

For his part, computer science student Virgil Griffith developed a program that could track the IP addresses of those editing Wikipedia articles, thereby tracing them back to the CIA and the FBI. He was later sentenced to prison for a cybercrime.
However, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger personally confirmed that CIA and FBI computers are used to edit Wikipedia articles.
