Science discovers God

Michel-Yves Bolloré, author of *“God, Science, Evidence”*, explains how contemporary science cannot help but conclude that God exists. We offer quotes and comments from his article published in December in London’s The Catholic Herald.

History of a five-century mistake

At the beginning of the 20th century, materialists could proclaim their apparent victory in the debate about God. In the previous four centuries, scientific discoveries sought to spread a materialistic view of the world. This progress profoundly disturbed European thought, which until then had been Christian at its roots, taking for granted divine creation from nothing, as revealed in the Bible.

The Earth was no longer the center of the universe, and the sun no longer revolved around it (Copernicus, 1540 to Galileo, 1610). Physical laws governed the movement of the stars (Newton, Descartes, Laplace, 1650-1800). The Earth had not come into being six thousand years ago, as the Scriptures seemed to suggest, but was older than anyone could have imagined (Buffon, 1780). And man himself had only appeared after an immense evolution (Lamarck, 1810 to Darwin, 1870), burdened with the humiliating revelation that he was descended from apes.

Faced with these ideas, many philosophers in European universities concluded that a Creator was no longer needed to explain the world. Some thinkers went even further, claiming not only that God did not exist, but that even believing in his existence was harmful. Faith, they said, was the opium of the people (Marx, 1870) and the source of humanity’s alienation and neuroses (Freud, 1890).

This new Weltanschaung (worldview) inspired new philosophies which, in turn, found their political expression in totalitarianism. Both scientists and philosophers believed that materialism had become the very language of science. However, the sciences underwent a profound return to God. Within a century, a cascade of discoveries would fundamentally challenge the materialistic worldview that had dominated the previous centuries.

The Great Return to God

Scientific discoveries have fundamentally challenged the pillars of materialism. The book God, the Science, the Evidence, written by Michel-Yves Bolloré, together with Olivier Bonnassies, tells the story of this extraordinary scientific revolution of return and the response of the materialists. Following the astonishing discoveries of the 20th century, it once again became difficult, if not impossible, to explain the universe without resorting to the hypothesis of a Creator. In less than a century, four new revolutions shook the foundations of materialism, although the public remains largely unaware of this.

The first revolution: thermodynamics

The first occurred in the mid-19th century with the birth of thermodynamics. Its second law revealed that all things decay and that the universe itself was inexorably heading toward its end, the “heat death” of the cosmos. However, everything that comes to an end must also have had a beginning, and everything that begins must have a cause. Svante Arrhenius, the celebrated chemist, Nobel laureate, and avowed atheist, refused to believe it, so disturbing were its implications. Even Einstein hesitated for years before admitting that it was one of science’s greatest discoveries.

The second revolution: the expanding universe and the Big Bang

Then came the discovery of the expanding universe, which implied the need for a beginning, what we now call the Big Bang. It offered new and independent confirmation that the cosmos had a definite origin.

Many of the scientists who promoted this theory in Russia or Germany were persecuted. Stalin and Hitler understood that such ideas were capable of destroying their materialistic ideologies. This episode remains almost totally unknown to the public, perhaps because even today it is too provocative, because it demands a morally responsible response from every human being.

In the West, the theory of the “primordial atom,” proposed by Lemaître in 1930 and implying an absolute beginning of the universe, was ridiculed and buried until, by pure chance, irrefutable evidence emerged that confirmed it indisputably (Penzias and Wilson, 1963).

The third upheaval: the fine-tuning of the universe

Shortly thereafter, in the mid-1960s, the fine-tuning of the universe was discovered, a third upheaval so remarkable that the materialist astrophysicist Fred Hoyle publicly changed his position and acknowledged the need for a Creator.

The fourth upheaval: DNA and the complexity of life

The fourth shock was the discovery of DNA and the astonishing complexity of life itself (Watson and Crick, 1953). This revelation led to the abandonment of Darwin’s idea that the first living cell could have arisen by chance in a small warm pond at the foot of a volcano and that man descended from apes. This complexity was unimaginable: the information density of DNA is billions of times greater than that of a modern cell phone, a device that no one imagines could appear by accident in a hot water pond.

In the West, materialist scientists proposed a series of new theories to escape the implications of these discoveries, but most of them turned out to be false.

The paradox of dying materialism

Thus, in less than a century, materialism, which was never more than one belief among others, has become an irrational creed. However, few are likely to renounce it, as materialism remains the most suitable creed for those who, like George Wald, do not want to recognize any limits to their freedom, let alone the freedom to decide for themselves what is good and what is evil. Although in retreat, Marxist-style materialism sadly continues to inspire WOKE ideologies today. Its fruits are horrific and are being rejected around the world.

Conclusion

However, history has its own irony. The same science that once sought to dethrone the Creator has now traced the outline of His hand. Materialism, born of the triumph of reason, ends in irrationality; faith, dismissed as superstition, reappears as a condition of wonder.

The circle is complete, and the question with which modernity began returns with renewed force: not whether God exists, but how long man can live as if He did not.
