Explosive union of Islam with the left

We summarize an interview recently published in Switzerland/NZZ. Professor Susanne Schröter explains that “The white West is the common enemy that unites leftists and Islamists”.  Schröter is an ethnologist and director of the Center for Research on ‘Global Islam’ in Frankfurt, a world authority on the subject.  She warns about the negative consequences of uncontrolled immigration: “I have no qualms about addressing the critical aspects of contemporary Islamism and the dark spots involved in immigration policy.” She has thus become what mainstream German journalism calls “the controversial person”. Her opponents have branded her as an anti-Muslim racist.

The political theocracy of Islam

Political Islam is a reality in countries with large numbers of Muslim immigrants, seeking to establish the rule of the Arab caliphate. In London, for example, in certain areas of the city, the official British authorities have had to accept that they are governed by the laws of the Koran. And recent Islamic immigration in Sweden has been partly criminalized, producing an unprecedented social crisis in a country with such a high standard of living. The Islamic problem is also seen especially in Germany and France, which constitute time bombs that can explode at any moment. https://thinktanklatam.org/?s=pretensiones+of+instauration

In certain leftist circles, these facts are justified with an almost religious dogmatism: “We do not criticize immigrants, we do not criticize immigration policy, we are in favor of open borders and we also believe that Islam is a religion discriminated against and mistreated by the West”. Anyone who goes against these dogmas is automatically branded a right-wing extremist and is intimidated and silenced “by all possible means,” as Prof. Schroeter herself has suffered.

Schröter speaks of “insane intolerance”. Leftists who support hegemonic Islam believe that only their own opinion is the true, the right, the only humane and acceptable one. Everything else is disqualified.” Such a totalitarian pretension can also be found in official German government documents, such as, for example, the study “Muslimfeindlichkeit – eine deutsche Bilanz” (Aversion towards Muslims, a stocktaking of the situation in Germany), published by the Ministry of the Interior, which recently had to be officially withdrawn and destroyed.

Islamists and the left join forces

The war between Israel and Hamas has provoked support for Palestine in large university circles. However, Schroeter claims that there is “a left-wing camaraderie with Islamism that goes back to the late 1970s.” At first glance, it seems a contradictory alliance; after all, the two sides have completely different values. But “the common enemy unites these people,” says Schröter. For the left woke, capitalism, is the main enemy. “Their idea is to move toward a socialist future, and for that they need allies.” Now that the alliance with the working class has failed, like alliances with states outside Europe and other 20th century experiments, the left is trying it with Muslims. And something analogous is happening with the Muslims of the Middle East.

In the universities of the West, dominated by woke leftists, a system of ideological thinking has developed that presents itself under a wide variety of guises. The basic presupposition of so-called “postcolonial theory” is always the same. “It presupposes that the white West has not changed its mentality since colonial times,” Schröter explains. “White Westerners always need someone they can devalue, discriminate against, subjugate, which in Christian terms could be called: evil personified.” Anyone who argues against it is automatically considered morally ambivalent. That is why he speaks of an ideology; and the humanities are at “the origin of this whole movement.”

Trauma as the root of Muslim anti-Semitism

However, this does not explain why, on the other hand, so many Muslims in Europe sympathize with the Hamas attack. Schröter sees here a major trauma affecting all Muslims, apart from solidarity among Arabs. “European colonialism has replaced Islamic expansion, which was already well advanced a hundred years after the death of Mohammed. The Mohammedans were convinced that God was really on their side and that Allah wanted the whole world to be Islamic.” This remains the narrative today.

The fact that the initial success faltered and eventually collapsed completely with the Ottoman Empire “is a great trauma for the Islamic world. And this trauma is reactivated again and again, and the conviction is cried out again and again that it is really us who should be expanding, not the Europeans.” At the same time, Israel is seen as a project of the West; in the eyes of the Muslims, Israel will “always be the sting” that has no right to be there”.

The issues of Islamism and migration are thus essentially linked: the more Muslims are welcomed, the more this problem will intensify. Especially since, on the other hand, the West lacks a normative framework as an alternative to which migrants could initially be welcomed. “As liberal democracies, our societies have maximum openness. Everyone must be left to their own devices. The idea of a dominant culture is rejected.” This combination is “conceptually bad, and is naturally wielded by Islamist agitators.”

Universities have failed

Prof. Schröter regrets that hardly anyone in universities works on topics such as Islamism and the dark side of migration, for fear of losing one’s reputation. This is because the beliefs of the left woke – Schröter speaks of “religious impetus” – have been brought into the media and the art scene by university graduates, “but we also have them in educational documents and educational institutions.” It is hard to imagine a change of direction occurring without an outburst. “The self-purifying power of universities is nil. People are afraid that everything will blow up in their faces.” Schröter expresses the hope “that the democratic center will finally move and stand up for civil liberties and democracy, without drifting to some extremist political side.”

However, he believes there are two more likely scenarios: that the left woke up and certain demands of theirs become law, which would undermine both the rule of law and democracy. Or that an ultra-right movement will prevail.
