En junio de 2016, el Parlamento aprobó el proyecto de ley C-14, también conocido como Ley de Asistencia Médica para Morir. A partir de entonces, el MAiD sería ley. En este sentido, Canadá no estaba solo: Los Países Bajos, Suiza, Bélgica, España, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, entre otros, permiten el suicidio asistido. En 2017, el primer año completo en el que funcionó el MAiD, administrado por los gobiernos provinciales, 2.838 personas optaron por el suicidio asistido, según un informe del Gobierno. En 2021, esa cifra había aumentado a 10.064, lo que representaba más del 3% de todas las muertes en Canadá ese año.
Ha habido un total de 31.664 muertes MAiD y la gran mayoría de esas personas tenían entre 65 y 80 años cuando murieron. En 2017, solo 34 muertes por MAiD se produjeron en la categoría de 18 a 45 años. En 2018, esa cifra aumentó a al menos 49. En 2019, fueron 103; en 2020,118; y en 2021, 139.
In 2015, Canada’s Supreme Court ruled that assisted suicide was constitutional. In June 2016, Parliament passed Bill C-14, otherwise known as the Medical Assistance in Dying Act. MAiD was now the law of the land. Anyone who could show that their death was “reasonably foreseeable” was eligible.
