The recent sentencing of Weinstein, in the USA, to 23 years in prison for crimes of sexual abuse of actresses who played roles in his films, is the end point of a trial that has been going on for years and which has aroused a great deal of public attention in the USA, because it has touched the hypersensitive nerve of women, because the loss of moral principles in society has made women more and more victims of all kinds of disrespect and sexual harassment. When the first woman abused by Weinstein had the courage to legally ask for the protection of her dignity, this fact acted as the spark that set fire to gasoline. This is the origin of the ‘Me Too’ movement that more and more women are joining, first in the USA and then all over the world, challenging all predatory machismo, which has unfortunately appeared in force in the last years.
The two women accusers of Harvey Weinstein represented 80 others who worked for him in Hollywood, thus lifting the veil that hid the back of the film business show in Hollywood, revealing a corrupt and corrupting world, where Weinstein trafficked bodies in exchange for support and promises of triumph and glory in the world of feature films of great financial caliber and high box office.
The # Me Too movement
It draws attention to how a firm attitude of a woman, at the moment of denouncing a crime, in a state of law, obtains justice and punishment of the guilty. It is sad to say, but who has not seen how sexual predation is perpetrated on women in situations of dependence on work, who so often tolerate and endure everything in order to provide for their families. I remember my stay in Paraguay from 1948 to 1969, how poor girls from the countryside came to Asunción to work as domestic servants, and so many times they were easy prey for the son of the head of the family or for himself. Similarly, this happened on the ranches with the daughters of the muleteers who worked for the rancher. The situation is similar in all countries where there is a marked social vertical.
Favorable repercussions
The Me-Too movement is having very interesting repercussions to observe at other levels, such as that of social justice and, above all, in the field of politics. Never has it been so accessible, through digital communication, to implement platforms of action, independent of political parties, where citizens exercise their constitutional right to petition the political authorities, as a result of a vigilant attitude, which every citizen should have in the face of the management of the common good by state officials and entities. When things go wrong here, the responsibility also lies with the citizens, who had given themselves over to total passivity, without bothering or taking time to protest effectively. There is no point in fixing the world around the table, criticizing and casting invective on the government, it is even counterproductive because the force escapes through the mouth and is lost in the air.
